Cultivating Gratitude and Thanksgiving
The Heart of Gratitude
While gratitude is a central theme throughout the Bible as a response to God’s goodness, mercy, and love, there are seasons in life that bring challenges, sorrow, and grief. How do we cultivate a spirit of gratitude in every circumstance?
The Apostle Paul reminds us in 1 Thessalonians 5:18, “Give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.” This radical gratitude isn’t just reserved for moments of abundance; it can transform our perspective, even in times of challenge.
Take a moment to check-in honestly with your current circumstances:
Are you in a good place and all is going well in your life?
Have you overcome a recent challenge and feel like it’s a new season?
Are there strained relationships with family and/or friends?
Has there been a loss that you are still grieving?
Is there a current health challenge personally or with a loved one?
Is there a financial burden you are facing?
It’s easy to be thankful when life is going well, but what about when we face trials and disappointments?
Life can be hard, and even in the difficulties, we are encouraged to cultivate gratitude in thankfulness. The Bible encourages us to find reasons for gratitude even in hardship. Romans 8:28 assures us, “And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him.” Choosing gratitude in tough times is an act of faith. Sometimes we may not see the beauty of a plant that is growing in the ground. It is only when we recognize there is an entire root system underneath the soil that is producing what will be necessary for healthy, vibrant growth that comes as seasons shift.
The Power of a
Thankful Spirit
How can we cultivate gratitude when it feels like life is falling apart? I have certainly been in those seasons and had to learn how to be thankful in every circumstance rather than falling into the trap of blame, anger, frustration, and self-pity. Honestly, in hard times, it is easier to go to a place of non-gratitude (I made up this word!), which is also known as ingratitude. However, when we do, the circumstances become even harder. It is God’s peace in the storms that provides the courage and strength we need to navigate better.
Gratitude has the power to shift our focus from what we lack to what we have. It helps us see beyond our circumstances and recognize every good gift comes from above (James 1:17). When we actively practice thanksgiving, we invite the peace of God and joy into our lives.
By the way, I see the word “JOY” as Jesus On You. Because joy doesn’t always mean jumping up and down or intense happiness. Joy can simply be the presence of Jesus in those super hard seasons.
Studies have shown that people who regularly express gratitude experience greater emotional well-being and stronger relationships; these truths echo the spiritual benefits the Bible promises to those who give thanks.
Practical Ways to Cultivate Gratitude
1. Begin Each Day with Prayer: Thank God for a new day and the opportunities it brings. Even if the day feels heavy or uncertain — find one thing that is going right or you can appreciate. It could be something like having hot water, or electricity to having a car, or perhaps a friend you can call for prayer.
2. Keep a Gratitude Journal: Write down daily blessings — big or small — as reminders of God’s faithfulness. It may be as simple as being able to take a breath and breathing in the peace of God.
3. Practice Thankfulness in Relationships: Express appreciation to family, friends, and coworkers. Words of affirmation can be powerful. Express appreciation to yourself!
4. Apply self-affirming truths that line up with the word of God like:
For I am your greatest encourager 2 Thessalonians 2:16-17
I am also the Father who comforts you in all your troubles 1 Corinthians 1:3-4
When you are brokenhearted, I am close to you Psalm 34:18
I have said these things to you, that in me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation. But take heart; I have overcome the world. John 16:33
So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand. Isaiah 41:10
For God gave us a spirit not of fear but of power and love and a sound mind. 2 Timothy 1:7
5. Serve Others: When we help those in need, we become more aware of our own blessings and God’s provision.
6. Worship and Praise: Make thanksgiving a regular part of your worship, singing praises and sharing testimonies of God’s goodness.
Living a Life of Thanksgiving
As we enter the day of Thanksgiving, let us carry the spirit of gratitude with us every day. By acknowledging God’s blessings, both seen and unseen, we not only honor Him but also find deeper joy, peace, and purpose. May our lives be a continual offering of thanks, reflecting the love and grace we have received through God, Jesus, and the Holy Spirit.
“Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good; his love endures forever.” — Psalm 107:1
